2024 Birthright Fudge

The 2024 Birthright Fudge season has begun! In my house, Fudge season is defined by the mingled scents of warm chocolate and sweet caramel corn, an assembly line of fudge bowls waiting for mixing, and countless pans of setting chocolate covering counters, refrigerator and freezer shelves. Over nearly 30 years, we’ve heard from loyal fans that they look forward to Birthright Fudge season all year round. Those 5-6 weeks in November/December when people crowd ’round to buy Birthright Fudge, little boys tear through the house looking for their money because, “Mom… It’s Fudge Day!” and fudge-packing parties are all the rage with their older siblings.

Our 2024 Birthright Fudge season features seven varieties of dark and milk chocolate fudge, from the ever popular Black Forest Fudge to our newest, Maple Ribbon, plus chocolate dipped Apricots and home-made Caramel Corn. Some have nuts, and some don’t. All are gluten-free but made in a home kitchen, so trace amounts may be present. Although there’s no getting around the fact that Fudge is by nature rich and sweet, our darker varieties are less so. We are also able to offer dairy-free versions of our Black Forest and Midnight Mint Fudges, by special order.

If you find yourself facing an unexpected pregnancy, it’s important to remember that you are not alone. Unplanned pregnancy in Victoria BC, can bring a whirlwind of emotions—panic, disbelief, fear, anger, embarrassment, excitement, and even resentment. To navigate this challenging time, consider taking these steps: seek support, connect with the right people, consult with an expert about your options, and find specialised help for unexpected pregnancy here in Victoria BC.

As with any significant decision, it’s crucial to take the time to accept, process, and decide on your next steps. At Birthright Victoria, we offer essential guidance on coping with an unplanned pregnancy.

5 Handy Tips for Self-Care During Your Unplanned Pregnancy

When facing an unplanned pregnancy, remember—you are not alone. Support is available, and self-care is crucial for you and your baby. Neglecting self-care not only impacts your well-being but also affects your baby’s health. Stress is an everyday companion during pregnancy, and with the added responsibility of carrying a child, it can intensify. A stressed mom often leads to a stressed baby. While many things during pregnancy are beyond your control, there are several aspects you can manage.

In this blog, we’ve put together a helpful guide on self-care during an unplanned pregnancy, providing various options to explore.

1. Rest

Rest is essential because your incredible body works hard, creating a new life! This means your body is expending more energy than usual, so prioritizing rest is critical. Take short naps during the day, or close your eyes and put your feet up for 20 minutes. Don’t feel guilty about needing these breaks. While not everyone can nap, try to incorporate these moments of rest, especially if you’re not getting the recommended 7 hours of sleep each night. As an extra tip, sleeping on your left side can help reduce nausea.

2. Exercise

Remember the famous line from Madagascar, “We like to move it! Move it!”? Staying active is beneficial during pregnancy. Exercise improves blood circulation and keeps you fit, although your routine may differ from your pre-pregnancy workout, especially after the first trimester.

Consider activities like water aerobics, prenatal yoga (a favourite among many expecting mothers), swimming, walking, and light cardio. Avoid anything too strenuous, and always consult your healthcare provider before starting any new exercise routine.

3. Pamper Time

Even though you’re expecting, you still deserve some pampering. This doesn’t have to involve a spa day—it can be as simple as enjoying your favourite face mask or relaxing in the tub with a bath bomb. If possible, treat yourself to a pedicure with a friend! Pampering can also mean outsourcing household chores when you need a break. There’s nothing wrong with sitting on the couch, watching your favourite movie, or reading a good book while a robotic vacuum handles the cleaning.

4. Snuggle Up

Slip into your comfiest clothes and snuggle up with a loved one or furry friend. Hugging someone you care about releases oxytocin, a feel-good hormone that boosts your mood and overall happiness. While it’s not scientifically required, getting plenty of hugs can improve your emotional well-being. And don’t forget, pet hugs are just as beneficial as those from humans. The bond between animals and humans reduces stress, so meet your daily hug quota—whether with a person or a pet!

5. Remember Your Mental Health

Your mental health is just as important as your physical health. With the hormonal shifts of pregnancy, you might experience mood changes. However, if you’re struggling with anxiety or depression, it’s essential to seek support. These feelings are common during pregnancy, so remember—you are not alone. Talk to your partner or a mental health professional who can guide you. There’s no shame in asking for help, and it’s certainly not a sign of weakness. Professional support can make a significant difference in your emotional well-being.

6. Outside Help

Some young girls find comfort in working with a midwife or doula. While not every teenager will choose this path, it’s an option worth exploring. These professionals are trained in pregnancy care and can assist you in staying healthy and developing a birth plan. There’s no pressure to opt for this route if it doesn’t resonate with you. Additionally, consider leaning on your friends and family when needed. A strong support system can significantly reduce stress, knowing your loved ones are there to help you and your baby. You don’t have to do it all alone.

Self-Care During Your Unplanned Pregnancy

Self-care doesn’t have to involve expensive spa days or dining at the finest restaurants. It’s about doing what makes you feel good and nurtured. Whether that’s a warm hug, unwinding with your favourite show, or sitting by the beach with friends watching the waves—what matters is that it provides you with the care you need. Remember, caring for yourself ensures you and your baby stay healthy and safe throughout pregnancy. Growing another human is a big task, but you’ve got this! You are not alone, and support is available. Don’t forget—you matter too, so prioritize yourself during this journey.
